What do you think of this? One of my friends is almost 24 and has NEVER had a paying job in her life. She's in her final year of college and spends her
summers in other countries doing Bible camps and things, all funded by her parents. She's going to Peru this summer, parents paying of course, and
doesn't understand why I can't afford to go. When myself and some other friends tried to tell her she'd find it really difficult to get a job
without any experience, she didn't believe us. She really thinks she can just walk in with a bachelor degree and get a job. I had a really hard time
because of lack of experience, but at least I'd had 3-4 'real' jobs. I seriously can't imagine being 24 and NEVER having had a job!

Wow, i've been working since i was 16 (i'm 25 now)! She's gonna find it really difficult when she does get a job i think. Just because its
something she's not used to at all. Its gonna be a slap in the face to the real world, and how most people live.

That's just insane to me. I'm 24 right now and I couldn't even imagine that. But then again, I've lived on my own for a few years now.
But I do have to add that I didn't have a real job until I was 19, and at the time the only reason I got it was because my parents wanted me to learn the responsibility of saving money before I went to school. They paid for my first few years of school, because my dad didn't want me to have a crazy amount of debt. But I'm sure she'll have some trouble getting a job, I know you guys are telling her this, but maybe she just needs to experience it for herself before she realizes. |

I'm not one of those people who was working since 13 either, but I definitely had to work in the summers during college because there was no way my parents
were paying for me to attend some volunteer camp! It just really annoys me because she doesn't seem to realise it's not normal to be 24 and never had a
job. She implied that I was a quitter because I hate my new job and am changing jobs - I was like WTF? Wait until you hit the real world and see what it's
like to work somewhere you hate and not be able to quit because you have rent and bills to pay. She really has no idea!

I was 13 or so when I got my first job in a bookstore a few hours a week. She's missing out cos you really do gain a lot of life experience from earning
your own money.

I'm 21 and I've never had a real job apart from baby-sitting, cat-sitting, but I'm in a country where you don't start working until you're
about 18/20 years old, and a lot of people usually only start working until after they finish college, so i'm not really worried for myself.

I think it's fine, I mean she's getting life experience, who wouldn't like to to have traveled the world before having to be bogged down by a job?
If you can do it, you should!

Well, I've travelled AND worked. We have to live abroad as part of the degree, but I worked in hotels instead of my parents paying for me to do stuff. I
think never having a proper job makes people very immature and really lacking in life experience. You're in a situation where you have to get along with
different people, be shouted at by people, basically learn how to function outside of a college environment where everyone is middle class and well off. When I
went for my first full time job, I had a really hard time because I had so little experience, so I can only imagine how hard it'd be to have none.

I started babysitting when I was 13 but my first paycheck job was when I was 15. It's gonna be a real shocker to her when she starts working. Not to
mention the fact it will be hard to find a job with no experience at all.

I agree with EuroMAFan. I went to college and had very little experience in the work field. I was a secretary at my school which wasn't hard and I dealt
with the same people everyday. I just recently got a supposed 'real' job now while I am finishing my degree and I can say its been the best thing for
me to have to deal with different types of people daily. I really do think it's good for college students to work. It truely does help them.

I don't think it's a big deal since she's in school.

I just think it's so sheltered and naive to think a college degree is fine, and employers will understand you've been in school the whole time. Yes,
maybe it's fine not to work during the academic year, but most people work in the summers, and it's expected that you have a degree AND work
experience. A degree on its own isn't worth much if you have no real life skills. And employers do NOT consider volunteering at a camp a real job. It might
be fine when you're 16, but at 24 it looks lame to only have that. I have some unpaid nannying and teaching work on my resume and I was advised to just
take it off or put it in 'interests'.

What is she going to school for? And frankly, most employers don't give a rats ass about a job at American Eagle or Starbucks

She's doing French and Spanish but apparently she wants to be a social worker.
So yeah...her parents have paid for her to do a degree just for fun........ I disagree about the jobs, I think most employers value ANY paid employment over nothing at all. |
