I was feeling nostalgic about a fandom that I left years ago so I went to check out some of my favorite stories and they were gone from everywhere. I
understand leaving a fandom but why do authors take down every single thing they have ever done, even if they don't like it any longer? Obviously, someone
liked it. I wish I had known enough to save it but I wasn't thinking in those terms; I was young and thought it would stay on the Internet forever. I just
don't think it's such a big deal. It's not like it's freaking War & Peace...it's damn fanfiction.

No joke, my friend got this today from a fanfic writer for reposting her stories for people to hadn't read them after she took them down:
What the hell are you doing? Nobody gave you permission to post ANYTHING OF MINE, especially things that I never even posted. You cannot do this without my permission, so don't think I won't take this up with someone who knows about this crap, or infringement. Delete your entry and leave it alone. I'm asking. I laughed for a good 5 minutes. |

I can understand part of why that person was upset because posting stories other places is kind of a no-no. My problem lies with that fact that she took them
down to begin with...what was the point? Some people egotrip way too much.

Haha, yeah I know, I just thought it was funny 'I will take this up with someone who knows about infringement' um, alright then.
But yeah, the writer I was talking about did take the stories down for no reason, which is why someone decided to repost them because lots of people hadn't finished and were asking for them. It's a massive egotrip. |

Well, isn't that the fine line with fanfiction? The characters aren't really theirs, just borrowed. So you can't really get someone for copyright
infringement when the stuff you wrote is borrowed from something else. That's why I found it funny.
Like I get it, the plots are theirs, but if someone actually went to try and fight someone for reposting their stories, they'd most likely get a WTF look. And if you posted something in the first place on a public domain without already having a copyright on it, isn't it fair game as long as you don't try to make it your own? |

This one writer took down her stores for public viewing but emails them to anyone who asks. Others try to get snobby and that they've moved on...it's
just weird. It's been on the net for years, why not just leave it alone?

westcoaster wrote:Actually, they retain the authorship of the work. They do not retain control of where the work travels as long as they are properly credited. If someone tries to steal a fanfiction author's work and pass it off as their own, then there are grounds for a legal claim. But in the case of reposting, the above author has no case. If you post anything where more than 3 people would have access to it, it is now public domain. |

I know that I personally took all of mine down because I grew up and they were embarrassing, full of mistakes, and I just cringed, no matter how many people
liked them.
It's the principle of the matter, especially if
they're still writing other things out there on the internet and they don't want those readers stumbling upon old work that's not up to par with
how they're writing now.
