Is rap/hip-hop considered more spoken word or music? I have wondered about this.

Goat with numbers -- yeah. Like with the reggae toasters who do mostly talking, isn't rap primarily spoken word recited over a repetitive beat with samples
and such mixed in?

KellySD wrote:When rap first started it was more talking over music, but I think it has grown a lot since then. Plus, a lot of rappers are "singing" on records now too. |

KellySD wrote: there are so many subgenres that you cant make absolute generalizations. Hip hop isnt primarily anything. Yes, there is spoken word, like what you'd hear on a session of Def Poetry Jam. Yes, there are the over synthesized songs from the 80s where rappers had yet to master internal rhyme schemes There are also the mellow, jazz infused sounds of Pete Rock and J Dilla There's the hardcore nihilistic breaks from Wu-Tang Clan and Smif N Wessun You can't really group it all into one. |
