How do I broach this? Approach the neighbors directly? Go to the leasing office? I've never had this issue before!

My upstairs neighbors are the loudest motherfuckers on the planet. I SWEAR they move from room to room on a pogo stick, so it just reverberates through my
apartment below. Most of the time, I can ignore it, because they have a toddler, and I know living in an apartment means it won't be as quiet as it would
be in a 'regular' house. But god... it's getting insane. The picture frames in my apartment actually RATTLE from time to time.

I have the same issue. And mine makes this much noise at like 3am. I think I'm going to talk to management. I don't know what's going on up there
and I don't want to get myself involved.

That's my thing. I don't even know if they speak English. Sometimes I think I hear someone yelling... I don't often hear mine super late at night,
but ALL DAMN DAY.
I was home sick today and the noise never stopped. Someone doesn't have a job! |

I'd probably talk to management before confronting them. But I guess either way, they'll know it was you, since you're the one who lives below
them. Are they friendly with you?

I'd approach them myself first. I think that's nicer. Just kindly tell them that sometimes it gets a little loud in your apartment and could they
please try to keep it down. If they ignore you, go to management.

I've never spoken with them. I don't even know that I would recognize them if I saw them out and about in the complex.
My biggest worry is that they'll... I don't know. Take some sort of retaliatory action. |

Complain to the leasing office.
I did that when my neighbors would start arguing and screaming at the top of their longs at all sorts of random hours and it would last for hours. They then put a notice of lease violation on their door. The limit is supposed to be 3 before they're kicked out but I complained 3 times so either they gave them leeway or didn't do it one time (which I think this is the case). Either way, since my last complaint (which was probably 6 months ago or something) I've only heard them arguing once or twice and it ended quickly so management had to give them a warning of some sort. Here all complains remain anonymous. They just say that neighbors are complaining of the noise. Think of it this way, while it's your ceiling, if they're making enough noise to make your pictures and walls rattle, you can bet that the other neighbors can hear it as well. It's a bedroom wall I share with them but if I could hear them once when I moved to the couch (which is in my living room), you can bet that the people whose bedroom was below and above could hear them as well.

I would probably go to the leasing office to let them know. I don't think I would directly approach them. You just never know how they will react. My
parent's have some horrible loud redneck neighbors behind them. My mom tries to hint around to them at times how loud they are and has even called the
police on them a few times annonymously.
Well, apparently the man got so mad at his dog he beat him to death a few weeks ago. The dog was barking and being loud like most dogs do . The man got so mad he started beating on him. My dad hasn't heard the dog in a long time and he told my mom he better not mess with them anymore because they are crazy. AND my point is...you never know how people are. I'm sure they aren't psycho or anything. Sorry that was kinda off topic. |

I'm sticking with talk to management. And I agree with the poster who mentioned complaining about general noise. If you do that, rather than complaining
specifically about the ceiling noise, they won't know it was you. I generally feel that people who are making that much racket are probably not all that
aware of others around them and might be inconsiderate in general. My experience in those situations is that when confronted, those people get defensive and
mad, not understanding and apologetic.

When I complained to my leasing office about the noise of a neighbor, I made the mention that I would've talked to them myself but....
I didn't even finish the sentence before she interrupted and told me NOT to approach the neighbors for that kind of thing. That's what the management office was there for and I needed to call them to handle it. |

Are there hard wood floors in the apartments? If so is there a provision in the lease where x% has to be covered?

No hard wood floors. Carpet and tile.
I'll go talk to management tomorrow. The idea of confronting them was making me way nervous! |

Yeah no confrontation. Take it to management. Make the complaint, let them know that you want it to be anonymous, just in case they are dumb

I am going through this myself... I have elephants for upstairs neighbors. I just don't get how anyone can be so loud! Regardless of them being stompers,
we have another issue.
We can hear "everything". Living there for 6 months now, we have pinpointed the timing. The bed squeeking starts anywhere from 11-12:30am Su-Th and 12-2:30am F-Sa. They go about it for about 20 minutes and then the toilet whooshes. We of course crack up because really...who would have thought we would have that happen - that only happens on tv! It seems to always start just as we get settled in, it's all quiet, and pillows are fluffed just right. |

I'll reiterate that you should go to management.
Except the one time when I went to my landlord, the other tenant was like, dude, you should have just talked to me. I lived in the bottom floor of the house, and the guy lived on the top floor (separate entrance, obviously). We had our TV on too loud once after 11, and he dropped a box on the floor to "tell us" to turn it down. Thing was, we had gone from a DVD to live TV and didn't realize the volume difference was that big, and we had it turned down by the time he dropped the box. By that point, we were like, okay, not approaching him; he'll yell at us, so we'll go to the landlord. |
