Posts: 1420 (10/28/2009 9:11 PM) Reply Quote More Recent Posts	I'm starting grad school soon, and the computers I have access to are on their last legs. Any advice on good laptop brands and what I should be looking for? I don't need anything fancy, and would like to find something reasonable, but I know I'll need to be able to use it for Dreamweaver and things like that eventually. Thanks!

Posts: 15341 (10/28/2009 9:19 PM) Reply Quote More Recent Posts	Really depends. I work for a company that has a network that is PC based, so my designers like coding on a PC, but designing on a mac. Sure we can run Parallels, but I don't prefer that. For the money, you can get a good running PC, but if you're going into more visual design stuff, a mac should be fine.

Posts: 747 (10/28/2009 9:33 PM) Reply Quote More Recent Posts	I love DELL. We've only ever gotten DELL desktops and I'm about to buy another DELL laptop. My last DELL laptop lasted me for like...7 years. I wouldn't even need to buy a new one but somebody spilled beer on it...and it's mad old! Never had a problem with it. They are really reasonably priced as well.

Posts: 875 (10/28/2009 9:34 PM) Reply Quote More Recent Posts	Mac or Sony. If you get a dell, don't get an inspiron. Get an XPS instead. Inspirons are such crap. If you get a Sony, reformat it the day you get it because they put SOOO much crap on it that it's always way slower than it needs to be. If you get a mac, don't do anything to it, it's perfect!

I don't like the "get a mac" answer because what does that mean? Seems they have the same amount of problems in my experience. 80% of my design team works with both environments and we've had problems with both (easier to get PCs fixed as Apple tends to want to fix the computers themselves). For desktops, I've had my Dell for 5 years and my HP for 4, no problems, except my HP sucks the HELL out of my memory and my Dell needs a new fan. My iMac had a profile failure, my macbook had casing replaced, and disc drive replaced. Had both for less than 2 years. Some people have better luck. Some don't. Personally, I'd probably buy a reconditioned computer next since they QA them a little bit more.

Posts: 876 (10/28/2009 9:38 PM) Reply Quote More Recent Posts	I agree with cryinblue about buying refurbished. My refurbished computers have been better than the ones that were brand new! And they're cheaper.
