My birthday is July 5th so we would be there during the 4th. Is that a good time to go? Will the city be dead or full of tourists?
Is New Orleans a good birthday trip?

The 4th of July is when the Essence Music Festival takes place.

I've only been once and I loved it. I would definitely make a birthday trip out of it.

Well, my friends have already done their birthday in Vegas and I don't know if they want to spend money on a place that they have already traveled to. But
I think Vegas is good for birthdays. I am now looking at Costa Rica which seems to be the same price and my friend (who has been there) said that it is also
pretty cheap.

I went to school in NOLA and it's my most favorite city in the world. I think everybody needs to get down there at some point.
The summer months are absolutely BRUTAL when it comes to the weather, it's hot as fuck. Essence draws a lot of people so it will be packed. Edit: Obviously since I love it, I'd tell you to go there though! It is a really amazing city. I am moving back in Jan. and I can't wait! |

When did you go? Pre- or post-Katrina?
Where did you stay? Even post-Katrina, I was impressed with how well they dealt with the disaster. |

I stayed at my friends house in Metairie and she showed me around everywhere from Kenner to Downtown/French Quarter area and briefly through the Lower Ninth Ward. Obviously Katrina destroyed the city and there's still a ton of construction going on but there are plenty of other "older" historical cities in the South that are nicer and cleaner (Savannah, Charleston, ect.) |

Well, the 9th ward I wouldn't even go to (even though I've been there before Katrina). I think it's a diff. experience staying outside of the city
then inside. The Quarter has a lot to offer, as does St. Charles Ave.
I guess it depends on what you are looking for, or expecting. If you want something like NYC, that's not NOLA. A fun time? It's there ten-fold. I'm actually making my brother come there for his 21st. I can say that I have been down to Bourbon maybe a handful of times in the years that I lived there. I think it's a fun birthday city, though. It's not like the normal "city" most would expect, but it's definitely special. |
