After jasper tries to attack, Bella is talking to Carlisle while she gets stitches. He mentions their souls being damned and Bella says "is that why he
won't change me?!" What does that mean? They mentioned it in the next scene too when she is talking to Edward.

Edward doesn't want to be responsible for Bella's soul being damned. They all believe they are going to hell on a default for being vampires.
