For example, we were incredibly poor, but I thought we had plenty of money. When the poor were discussed, I felt so sorry for them and felt so thankful that I
didn't have to worry about money. Little did I know, we didn't have two pennies to rub together.

I didn't think anything of it until I was a little older and didn't really understand why my parents would always tell me that we couldn't have
this or that in the store. I thought we were just fine.
Now when I was a teenager and my parents were going through a divorce, I knew and didn't ask for anything I didn't absolutely need. |

P5 Teacher RN wrote:Same with me! I honestly never realized we didn't have money until I got older and looked back. My parents always made sure we had shelter, food, and clothing and I didn't care that it wasn't gourmet food or expensive clothing. I was always happy and never felt like I went without. We have a lot more money now and it is nice, but like I said, I never even really felt poor when I was younger. |

I thought we were pretty wealthy. In reality, we were very working/middle class.

We were average. I never felt poor and didn't really think about that stuff when I was a kid.

I thought we were pretty well off and in reality we were probably doing pretty decent. I knew we weren't rich and I knew we weren't poor.

I knew we had money because all my friends had free lunch and breakfast tickets but my brother and I had to pay

We were good thanks to the military.
I just always wondered why my mom never bought a house, even when she became a civilian. I'm always trying to get her to buy but she uses closing costs as an excuse and declares that she should keep renting. Now would be the perfect time to buy. |

We were poor as dirt, but at the time, I didn't realize it. Still am poor, just making by.

I was always hearing about how poor we were, and I would say, "we're not poor!" because we lived in a house in a nice neighborhood and had food
and clothing and everything. I went to school with people who didn't have any of that. Looking back, we were doing okay, but my mom was a single mother and
she felt a lot of stress trying to support 3 kids.

I felt spoiled, because my mom managed the money really well and I had (and still have) no siblings. I thought we had a lot of money, but my mom kept telling
me that we were actually poor. I didn't get everything I wanted.

I thought we were well off until I went to a high school in a very rich area of Long Island. Then I realized that were definitely just average.

My mom made everything seem so perfect, I guess. In front of me she was always in good spirits, and things like the Holidays were always such a big event.
Looking back on it now I'm so impressed with her parenting skills.

We were poor, but I had no idea. My mother worked her ass off to give me a roof over my head and 3 meals a day, I always had clothes and presents on Christmas.
I had everything I needed. We're still struggling...it's tough. Sometimes I wish I could go back to being oblivious.

My mom worked really hard to keep it from us and we had what we needed but we knew we were poor. Now that we're older we openly talk about the struggle and
pool our money together to get by.

The opposite to OP. My parents were solidly middle class (and eventually became very well off), but I felt poor. I wore mostly second hand clothes from other
peoples kids and we never got a lot for Christmas, never got an allowance. People always assume I come from a working class background because I'm not
snobby/pretentious and don't throw money around, I worked through college and have a scholarship now. I don't think any of my friends have any idea
what my parents do. Some of them sometimes make comments about how they used to get free lunch or milk at school, as if I'm supposed to join in and I'm
just like 'uh huh' - subject change! I have friends from the same socioeconomic background and I know they think I'm poorer than they are.

I knew that we didn't have a lot of money because we never got name brand things or went out to dinner...stuff like that. Plus my dad worked a full time
and part time job and my mom worked part time. We weren't poor, we just couldn't indulge in a lot of things.
